Fall Reminders

It is that time of year, autumn is in full swing and winter is just around the corner. Several tips for the fall will make the transition to winter much easier:

  • Remind students, staff and parents in the District Newsletter and on the District Website and/or any other means of communication the importance of wearing appropriate winter clothing…in particular footwear!
  • Inspect the snow removal equipment for each building to insure that the necessary tools are in place to deal with snow storms that may sweep across Montana.
  • At staff meetings and/or early out take a couple minutes to discuss safety precautions everyone should consider as winter approaches...being proactive is always safer that being reactive.
  • Allow the maintenance department and the custodial staff time to review snow removal procedures on district property.
  • Be sure that the summer/fall lawn care equipment is adequately maintenanced and stored for winter months.

Given the severe winter of 2011, Districts absent a Safety Committee should seriously consider establishing one to meet the growing work place safety needs that exist year around. Here are some suggestions to assist the District in creating a Safety Committee:

  • The committee should consist of classified and certified staff…it is staff driven not administration.
  • Keep in mind that everyone is busy so meet once a month or quarterly…set a maximum length of time the committee will meet.
  • A certified staff member from each building as well as the areas of the classified staff should be represented (maintenance, food service, custodian, paraprofessionals, etc.).
  • Committee members report to their buildings and/or group they represent.
  • Make everyone aware of the need to work safely by tracking work place injuries…celebrate quarterly the District successes!

The health, safety and welfare of staff and students should be a priority every day. That can only be attainable if the District and its employees take an active role in making work place safety materialize. Get involved…assist in creating a positive environment conducive to meeting the safety needs of everyone!
